Beethoven Symphony No 1
Here, it’s performed at the Beethovenfest Bonn 2021
by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted
by Michael Boder in the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB).

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827) is thought to have sketched out his first themes for the symphony in 1794, elaborating upon them predominantly in 1799,
with the premiere held in Vienna on April 2, 1800. The Symphony No. 1 – conducted by Beethoven himself – was met with public favor from the off,
and remains to this day one of Beethoven's most popular symphonies.

It is perhaps the most cheerful of Beethoven's symphonies, performed here with such lightness of step and deft elegance: Conducted by Thomas Hengelbrock, the Orchestre de Paris performs Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60, at a 2017 concert held at the Philharmonie de Paris.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) composed his fourth symphony in 1806, in a comparatively short amount of time. The March 1807 premiere was held in private, conducted by the composer himself, the first public performance being given in November of that same year. The Symphony No. 4 was well received during the composer's lifetime, but fell under later criticism. When held up against Beethoven's monumental Symphonies Nos. 3, 5, and 9 – it appears somewhat flat, less pregnant with meaning. The sunny nature of the Fourth should not however obscure the fact that it, too, is an expression of a theme which lay outside the usual bounds of music, and a formidable one at that; the theme of freedom.

Beethoven had been previously preoccupied with his opera Fidelio – the paradigm of the ‘rescue opera’ genre. An initial version was premiered in 1805, the second incarnation appearing in March of 1806. Beethoven's fourth symphony may be considered a continuation of Fidelio’s theme of liberation. The first movement, for instance, begins with a slow, brooding introduction, upon which the fast, lilting main theme bursts in like a liberating strike. Beethoven also references his sole opera in movements which follow. There is, however, an additional, programmatic parallel between Beethoven's Fourth and Fidelio: Both pieces deal with love. In the opera, the theme is openly played out, yet in the Symphony No. 4 it is expressed as a gesture, or a mood. Beethoven was experiencing a contented love affair with the Countess Josephine Deym von Stritetz while he was composing his fourth symphony.

(12:05) II. Adagio
(21:49) III. Menuetto – Trio: Allegro vivace – Un poco meno allegro
(27:21) IV. Allegro ma non troppo

It was the high point of Leipzig’s tenth anniversary celebrations of German reunification – Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, performed by the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig and conducted by Herbert Blomstedt. The commemorative concert was held in the St. Nicholas Church on October 9, 1999.

A key moment in history occurred in Leipzig – the former GDR’s second-largest city – on October 9, 1989, when some 70,000 Leipzig residents overcame their fear of their authoritarian state to demonstrate for freedom, and increased democracy. This ‘Monday demonstration‘ as it would become known ran peacefully, despite mounting political tensions, and would become one of the events that lead to the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, one month later.

The demonstrators' rallying cry of "Wir sind das Volk!“ – we are the people – was picked up again for this concert, where the fateful turn of history was to be commemorated with this performance of Beethoven's Fifth, also known as his 'Fateful Symphony'. It‘s said to have received the additional epithet by way of a bon mot from the composer himself. Speaking of its four opening notes and their famous rhythm, Beethoven is reported to have said "Thus, fate knocks at the door!"

This interpretation by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by Herbert Blomstedt, is positively ponderous in tempo, meaning one can listen intently to each twist and turn of Beethoven's symphony. In commemoration of that crucial day in Leipzig so shortly before the shift in the tide of world politics, this artistic choice certainly works to underscore the slow turning of fate.

(00:23) I. Allegro ma non troppo: Erwachen heiterer Empfindungen bei der Ankunft auf dem Lande(시골에 도착하면서 기분 좋은 감정이 깨어남)
(11:39) II. Andante molto mosso: Szene am Bach(시냇가의 풍경)
(23:42) III. Allegro: Lustiges Zusammensein der Landleute(시골 사람들의 즐거운 모임)
(29:05) IV. 알레그로: Gewitter, Sturm(뇌우; 폭풍)
(32:56) V. 알레그레토: Hirtengesang. Frohe und dankbare Gefühle nach dem Sturm(목동의 노래; 폭풍 후의 쾌활하고 감사한 감정)

Triumph and tragedy: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Bernard Haitink. The audience loved this 2009 concert at the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam.

(00:00) Introduction
(00:35) I. Poco sostenuto – Vivace
(14:46) II. Allegretto
(22:46) III. Presto
(32:08) IV. Allegro con brio

Ask a person on the street what their favorite Beethoven symphony is, and they’ll likely say the Fifth, or the Ninth. But ask a classical musician, and a surprising number of times you'll hear: The Seventh. "Here every impetuosity, every longing and ranting of the heart becomes a blissful exuberance of joy." Those effusive words came from the pen of composer Richard Wagner, when he was describing the Symphony No. 7 in A Major, opus 92 by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827).
